Money

How we handle money

Two different kinds of gift go through this fund, and they are not the same money. One is an offering that belongs to a priest. The other pays for work, and on that money we are bound by a legal limit.

Two kinds of gift

An offering — a candle, a Mass, a novena of nine, a Gregorian series of thirty. Every cent of it goes to the priest or the church that carries it out. We take no share, and it never becomes income of the fund.

A gift for the work — school meals for children in Africa, and the studies of men preparing for the priesthood. This is the fund’s own money, and the limit below applies to it.

What an offering for a Mass is, and what it is not

An offering for a Mass is not a price and not a donation to the fund. It is a gift to the priest who offers the Sacrifice for the intention you ask for. This is not our policy — it is the law of the Church.

Canon 945 §1 — a priest who celebrates Mass may accept an offering so that he applies the Mass to a particular intention. Canon 947 — the offering is kept entirely for the celebrant. Warmth of Mercy never takes a share of it and never earns from a Mass.

The legal cap on our administration

Administrative costs may not exceed 20% of the fund’s income in the current year — Law of Ukraine No. 5073-VI, Article 16, part 3. Everything else goes to the purposes you chose.

We do not promise a fixed share of every gift to programmes, because the law does not set one. We state the rule that binds us instead of a number we would have to keep defending.

We publish, because the law says we may

The structure and size of a charitable fund’s income and expenses are not a commercial secret under Ukrainian law — Article 17, part 3 of the same law. That is why we state these rules openly and will publish our figures.

What we do not do

We do not sell anything. A gift here buys no goods, no service and no delivery.

We do not trade in names or photographs of the people we help. We do not publish a child’s identity.

We do not promise outcomes we have not verified. Where we quote a cost, we say whose cost it is.

Tax receipts

A Ukrainian charitable fund cannot issue a receipt for the United States, Canada or the European Union. If you need a tax-deductible receipt in one of those countries, tell us — this is a structural question we are working on, not something we can solve for you today.
