How to pray the rosary, step by step
Two questions come up together: how is it done, and how long does it take. The full rosary usually runs 15 to 20 minutes. A single decade takes about a minute. Here is the whole thing in order.
Before you start
You do not need beads. People have prayed this on their fingers for centuries, and counting on ten fingers works perfectly well. You also do not need to know anything by heart before you begin; the prayers are in any prayer book, and it is normal to read them off a card for the first year.
The shape of it
You begin with the sign of the cross, then the Creed. Then one Our Father, three Hail Marys and one Glory Be. That opening is fixed and never changes.
Then come the five decades. A decade is one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, one Glory Be, and traditionally a short mention of the mystery you are holding in mind. After five of those you finish with the sign of the cross.
That is the whole structure. It is deliberately simple, and it has not changed in any significant way in centuries.
The mysteries, and which day is which
The rosary is not twenty minutes of the same sentence. Each decade carries a scene from the life of Christ, called a mystery, and there are four sets of five.
The joyful mysteries are the annunciation, the visitation, the nativity, the presentation in the temple and the finding of the child in the temple. The sorrowful are the agony in the garden, the scourging, the crowning with thorns, the carrying of the cross and the crucifixion. The glorious are the resurrection, the ascension, the descent of the Holy Spirit, the assumption and the crowning of Mary. The luminous, added most recently, are the baptism in the Jordan, the wedding at Cana, the proclamation of the kingdom, the transfiguration and the institution of the Eucharist.
The customary arrangement: joyful on Monday and Saturday, sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday, glorious on Wednesday and Sunday, luminous on Thursday. This is custom rather than law, and nobody is going to correct you for praying whichever set you need.
How long it actually takes
The five decades at a normal pace take about 15 minutes. Add the opening and the Creed and you are at 17 to 20. Prayed slowly, or in a group, or with the mysteries announced and a pause between them, it can run to half an hour.
If you have five minutes, pray one decade. This is not a failure. A single decade prayed on a bus is a real rosary in every sense that matters, and it is the version most people actually manage on a working day.
If you have no beads and no time and only want the shortest honest version, pray one Our Father and ten Hail Marys and mean them. That is the rosary's engine, and everything else is arrangement.
If your mind wanders
It will, and this is the most common thing people confess about the rosary, usually with embarrassment. The classic answer is not to try harder. You notice you have drifted, and you come back. Then you drift, and you come back again. Forty times, if that is how the day is going.
Coming back is not a break in the prayer. It is the prayer. Anyone who tells you they pray a rosary without being distracted is either unusually graced or not paying attention to themselves.
The beads help with this more than anything else. Having something in your hands and one small thing to do gives the body a job, and the mind settles a little when the hands are occupied.
Praying it for someone
People commonly pray a rosary for a particular person or a particular situation, holding one name through all five decades. That is a long-standing habit and a good one: it is the same prayers, with the person carried through them.
If you would rather the Church prayed as well as you, a Mass intention is the other half of that. You give a name and a need, a priest offers the Mass for it. The rosary is you praying; the Mass is the whole Church.
