How long does a wedding, baptism or funeral Mass last?
If you are the one planning the day, you need a number you can hand to a photographer and a restaurant. The honest answer varies by which Mass it is. Here are the working ranges, and what you can actually change.
The working ranges
A wedding Mass with music, a full liturgy of the word and the exchange of vows usually runs 45 to 60 minutes. Most parishes tell couples to allow an hour.
A baptism inside a Sunday Mass adds almost nothing: it is fitted into a service that was going to happen anyway, and often takes ten extra minutes. A baptism celebrated on its own, with a small group on a Saturday afternoon, usually runs 30 to 45 minutes.
A funeral Mass is normally 40 to 60 minutes. If the burial follows immediately at the same church or in an adjoining cemetery, add another 15 to 30 minutes for the committal.
A confirmation Mass, with a bishop present and a parish's worth of candidates, runs long: 75 to 90 minutes is normal, because there is a lot of anointing to get through.
Why weddings run over
Almost always the same three things: a homily that goes past fifteen minutes, music chosen by people who love music, and photographs. Photographers work inside the liturgy now, which is a change from thirty years ago, and everything slows down politely to accommodate it.
If you are the one marrying, you can ask your parish for the shorter form of the rite. It exists, it is entirely valid, and no priest will be surprised or offended. If you would rather keep the full ceremony, allow the hour and tell your guests an hour and a half. People are almost never annoyed by finishing early.
Baptisms: the two versions
The version inside Mass is the older and the more common one, and it costs the parents almost nothing in time. The child is brought forward after the homily, the water is poured, everyone claps, and the Mass continues.
The separate version exists for families who want a smaller, quieter ceremony, or who cannot make a Sunday work. It is shorter than most people expect. Half an hour, plus however long you spend taking pictures afterwards, which is usually longer than the rite itself.
Funeral Masses, and the day around them
The Mass itself is roughly the length of any Sunday Mass, and often shorter, because the homily tends to be brief and there is usually no music beyond a cantor and an organist.
The thing that stretches the morning is everything around it: the family arriving, the eulogy if there is one, the procession to the cemetery, and the fact that people want to stay and talk afterwards. Allow three hours for the whole morning and you will not feel rushed.
What you can actually change
Quite a lot, and it is all done by asking. Homily length. How much music. Whether there is a procession. Whether the priest preaches on the readings or on the person. Parish teams arrange these things every week and are rarely precious about them.
What you cannot change is the shape of the liturgy itself, and it is worth knowing that the shape is the point. A wedding is not a performance with a running time. A funeral is not an event to be got through. The fact that these take time is not a design flaw.
The number to give your guests
Give them the range, not the minimum. Say an hour for the wedding ceremony even if you expect fifty minutes, and give the Mass start time, not the arrival time. If a wedding starts at two, guests should be in their seats at five to the hour, and they will thank you for being told so plainly.
And check with the parish before you commit to anything, rather than after. A priest who has married four hundred couples will tell you in one sentence what your particular church does, and that sentence beats any article, this one included.
FAQ
How long does a wedding Mass last?
Usually 45 to 60 minutes with music and the full rite. A shorter form exists if you ask your parish for it. Most photographers are told to allow an hour.
How long is a baptism?
A baptism inside Sunday Mass adds about ten minutes to a service that is happening anyway. A separate baptismal ceremony usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
How long is a funeral Mass?
Normally 40 to 60 minutes. If the burial follows immediately, allow another 15 to 30 minutes. The whole morning, including the gathering afterwards, is usually about three hours.
Why does the priest decide how long it takes?
He follows the rite and the parish's own practice. Asking him directly is the only reliable way to know what will happen in your church.
Can we ask for a shorter ceremony?
Yes. The shorter form of the wedding rite is fully valid, and parishes offer it routinely. Nobody will be offended by the question.
